When Is Cat Enucleation Necessary?

Enucleation is typically recommended when an eye is no longer functional and causes persistent discomfort. Some of the most common reasons for this procedure include:

  • Severe Trauma – Eye injuries from fights, accidents, or foreign objects can lead to irreversible damage.
  • Glaucoma – Increased eye pressure can cause extreme pain and permanent vision loss.
  • Chronic Infections – Severe or untreated infections may damage the eye beyond repair.
  • Cancerous Growths – Tumors in or around the eye may require removal to prevent further health complications.
  • Congenital Defects – Some cats are born with eye abnormalities that can cause chronic pain or impaired vision.

Post-Surgical Care and Recovery

Cats typically recover quickly after enucleation. Our team provides detailed aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth healing process. Key aspects of post-operative care include:

Pain Management

Medications are prescribed to keep your cat comfortable during recovery.

Incision Care

Keeping the surgical site clean and preventing scratching or rubbing is important.

Limited Activity

Restricting movement helps reduce swelling and allows proper healing.

Follow-Up Appointments

A post-surgical check-up ensures the site is healing properly and addresses any concerns.

What to Expect During Cat Enucleation

Before surgery, our veterinary team will perform a full evaluation to determine if enucleation is the best course of action. Pre-surgical tests, such as bloodwork, may be recommended to ensure your cat is healthy enough for anesthesia.

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. The affected eye is removed, and the eyelid is sutured closed to promote healing. Most cats adjust well to life with one eye, as they have often already adapted to reduced vision before surgery. You’re pet will go home with an e-collar (cone of shame) to prevent trauma to the incision during recovery
